Missed my time last night, my person was out at a party and locked things up!! She said that visiting some long lost friend was important. (Right she just wanted to go party on a Friday night.)
I recall my person's brother telling her that it would be nice for us to have a "green" area to spend time in. Well, I don't see anything happening with that yet. I see that there is extra fencing out by our "Hen House", so why is she not getting out here and working on getting some green stuff growing??? Her brother made it sound like it was some great thing that his chickens enjoyed, so I think we would enjoy it also.
That leads me to the next thing I would like to talk about. We really enjoy our big yard, and do not appreciate it when our person goes off to work and forgets to open the second gate so we can go into our yard. Thankfully her husband was there and opened it for us. I do appreciate that she came out early this morning and made sure we had food in our feeder. It was quite chilly this morning, I think I heard her say something about her little garden getting frozen last night.
While she was out working in the yard today I saw her staring at my tail feathers. They have gotten very handsome with iridescent green and blue. I bet she was thinking about making something or perhaps putting them in a hat. Tomorrow I will be sure and post a picture of my beautiful tail feathers so you can see for yourself how handsome they are and they need to stay right where they are.
I am not sure what is wrong with one of the hens, she won't come out of the nest. She just sits there staring straight ahead. She came for a quick bit to eat today and my person came running from the house and looked at the nest. For the life of me I do not have a clue what is going on!! She needs to get out and enjoy the fresh air, not sit on a nest all day.
Looking for a positive day tomorrow and to report some good things.
Hope all ya'll have a good nights sleep.

I miss my person!!!

The last couple of days I have only seen my person when she is saying goodnight. (When we are all on the roost she opens the door and says goodnight.) Not sure why she does this, I just hear her counting, maybe she is making sure we are all there. Where else would be be, it is after dark, everyone should be tucked into bed after dark and then up with the sun.

My person was pretty happy tonight because she found five eggs in the nests. Now that all the hens are laying maybe she will stop threatening us with the "stew pot". It seems like every day she has said something about the hens needing to start laying eggs or they were going to end up in the stew pot. She was saying something about "Chicken and Dumplings" for dinner. I don't quit understand why all the hens are laying their eggs in the same two nests. My person built 6 very nice nests for them to choose from and they just use two of them, crazy hens. At least they are not laying them on the ground somewhere!

My person was very nice to make a roost with plenty of room for all of us, that is until the hens got plump. I am the last one in the house, after checking to make sure all the hens are safe and sound in the house. By the time I got there tonight all the hens were on the top rung with no room for me. It is the bottom rung for me tonight, but I will be waking up plenty early to start my crowing.

Pumpkin, Pumpkin we like Pumpkin!

.Image result for pumpkin

My hens and I are very happy. Thank you Ken, brother of my person, for giving my person some pumpkins, those seeds were delicious. We got to have a couple pieces of pumpkin, too! My person must have had potatoes for dinner, because there were some potato peelings mixed in.

I keep hearing talk of corn that is drying for winter, what ever winter is. It would be nice for winter to share some corn with us, we like it. The corn we have had is not dry though, so that may be something different. It still sound like something good.

It is time to address the names people have suggested, so hear are my thoughts:
1. Calico King: This name reminds me of a quilt you would find at grandma's house. Then, again it does sound quite regal. I can see myself standing straight and tall with this name.
2. Lancelot: Now this one I like, since I am such a protector of my hens. A knight in calico armor, I am. It has quite the romantic tone about it.
3. Strut: Okay, the person who suggested this one knows I like to "strut my stuff". The only concern with this name if that it doesn't really sound endearing. I do like it though, maybe with a little background music.

These are hard choices.

Keep the names coming!!!!

Check out our digs!!

As you can see by this picture my person build a pretty nice place for my hens and I to live. Now, I am not one to complain, much, but the yard was a little small. After showing her how happy we were when we were able to roam, and I guess the fact that when we were roaming the yard we ate her plants, she built us a bigger yard. Now we have a big fenced in area to dig around in and find wonderful bugs to eat and a smaller covered safer yard. There is also a gate that her husband built so we can be safe inside the small enclosure when she is gone for a few days. She keeps talking about Red Tail Hawks being in the area. I bet I could take on a Red Tail any day of the week!

In case you hadn't noticed, there is a swing in the small yard. Well, this I understand used to be a play structure for her grandchildren and she turned it into a chicken coop. She told her friends, "The chickens just might want to swing sometime, so I am leaving the swing in there." Is she out of her mind!! Like we are ever going to hang out and swing when we have land to explore.

BTW: We did not get any scraps today. Please encourage her to peel those vegetables.

What an eventful day!!!

First, my person cleaned out the chicken house and put fresh hay down. She told us she was putting the crap into a sack to give to her brother. So that is what it means to give your brother crap. Hmm

Then, on the advice of her brother, my person put mulch in our yard. It was from a tall stack of mulch that her brother chipped for her. Such fun my hens had playing in it! We found lots of yummy bugs while breaking down and spreading the mulch. Ken's wife is very sweet and may steal us if my person is not careful.

To top of the day, we had a snake in the yard. My person came out and told us to stay away. Haha, you try to tell those hens to back off, they were going at that thing with killer instincts. She took all our fun away by chasing the snake away, saying something about not wanting us or it to get hurt. Was it a baby rattle snake or a garter snake, we will never know.

BTW my person does not have enough yummy peelings for us, so if you could encourage her to eat more vegetables that need to be peeled, I would appreciate that.

PS: I like the one suggested name, "Calico King", but not sure if my person would think it endearing.  Keep the names coming!

Since I don't have my own account I am using my person's account. This is a blog from a Rooster in Cassel, CA. I am very protective of my five hens and I enjoy eating the green tops of carrots, well pretty much anything my person throws to me.

Just look at my beautiful feathers and regal stance, how can my person thank that I might be anything but sweet. I enjoy watching tv, when my person lets me, also, I was watching a guest of my person checking her Facebook page. That is when I decided that I would start this Blog.
I need help here: My person says that she does not want to name me because I might turn mean and she will have to put me in the stew pot. Just look at this sweet face, how could she think such a thing. Could you please help me come up with an "endearing" name so she will never be able to "put me in the stew pot". Just post ideas in the comments and I will pick one. Please
Her granddaughter keeps looking at me with artistic eyes. She says,  "Those beautiful feathers would look great in my artwork." News flash: Not going to happen!!!! No stew pot or art display for this handsome bird.
I will try to sneak in an post something each day, if I can get past my person. Talk to you soon.
